MANILA, Philippines — Illegal cigarettes worth P48.95 million were seized in a police operation that also resulted in the arrest of four people in Mabalacat, Pampanga on Monday.

The contraband was discovered by members of the Central Luzon police and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in an Isuzu wing van, which was pulled over along MacArthur Highway in Barangay Cacutud.

Police conducted surveillance for one week after receiving information that a wing van was being used to transport and store untaxed cigarettes, according to Central Luzon police director Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez.

The team found the van carrying 759 master cases of cigarettes without tax stamps from the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

Aside from cigarettes, authorities seized the phones of the suspects, whose identities were not immediately available.
