Trends that are turning 10 in 2017

Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Treating search engines as chroniclers of the past, we 'asked' the likes of Google and Yahoo! to tell us what were the top fashion trends 10 years ago.

We've rounded up some of our query's results on this page - fashion trends that are turning 10 years old in 2017, so to speak.

Cutting back on the low-rise + thong combo

Low-rise pants (also referred to as "low-rise jeans", "lowriders" or "hipster jeans") were a staple in the 1970s disco era scene, a fashion mainstay which experienced a revival in the mid-1990s through the mid-2000s.

Identified as a type of pants tailored to sit below a wearer's hips, the low-rise revival saw certain revisions over its circa 1970s forbearers, as it was popularly paired with revealing underwear, thongs or t-back underwear, by ladies particularly.

The pairing, dubbed the "whale tail", saw its decline by 2007, invariably putting an end to the pairing's status as an "in thing" in fashion.

Sweatpants with writing on the bum

Ten years ago, ladies wearing sweatpants scribbled with writing on the bum was a common sight.

Words like "Bootylicious", "Juicy" (in reference to the Juicy Couture brand) and even statements like "This Space is for Rent" were among the many that either tickled funny bones or offended those who came by them.

Fast forward to today, sweatpants are still en vogue, sans "witty" statements sprawled on the behind.

The leggings + denim skirt combo

The year 2007 saw an influx of this fashion combination, mostly attributed as the staple wardrobe of choice of fans of the "emo" music genre.

Though the combination didn't exactly kick-off in 2007, it was one of the more definitive pairings of the year, one which didn't exactly die out like the low-rise + thong combo.

Popped up collars

Fashion pundits have pointed out in the past that the popped up collar trend was at its height during the 1980s, experiencing a resurgence in the mid-2000s.

2007 saw an increased interest in the trend, as various fast fashion brands started rolling out collared shirts lines that were designed to have their collars popped up.

Vests worn by women

Though vests for women wasn't as big as the decline of the low-rise + thong combo in 2007, an online image search on the style influencers of that year reveals a number of female celebrities wearing vests.

From Anne Hathaway to Anna Kendrick, feminine variants of the traditional male wardrobe item were worn by different celebrities in various gatherings and events. It was even a part of the headliners of "Kate Moss X Topshop" inaugural collection that year. (FREEMAN)
