The Freeman

BJ, Budik, Juan, Brandon, and Teo had planned for weeks to bike to the house of Manong Popoy on a hill! He had promised to help them make kites in the morning and fly them in the afternoon. It was going to be fun!

But when the four boys went to pick up Juan, he came out the door and said, “I am sorry I can’t come with you.”

“Are you sick?” BJ, Budik, Brandon and Teo asked, very concerned.

“Don’t worry, I am well,” Juan replied.

The boys were disappointed but they said, “OK, Juan, next time then?” They understood that Juan had his reasons, so they didn’t ask any more questions and biked away.

Left at home, Juan phoned his cousin, Lara, blind since birth. “Hello, Lara, happy birthday! Would you like me to bike you around today?”

Lara shrieked with delight, “Oh, would you, Kuya Juan? Can you bring me to the waterfall?”

Late in the afternoon, when Juan was cleaning his bike on their porch, he heard BJ, Budik, Brandon, and Teo from afar, “Juan, we have something for you!”

He turned around and saw his four friends walking towards him. They were holding up a lovely kite in his favorite blue color!
