STD can cause cancer, other life-threatening illnesses or even death. In women who are pregnant, STD can complicate delivery or cause the baby to be born with physical or mental defects. STD can make a person sterile - unable to ever have a baby.

Most STDs are treatable and curable - all are preventable. Early treatment is the next best thing to never getting the disease in the first place.
