“Emotional Creature” in Cebu
CEBU, Philippines – Drama Queen. Over the top. Attention-grabbing. Overreacting. The word "emotional" has widely been used in a negative context, especially in relation to women. Award-winning playwright Eve Ensler, the woman behind the critically-acclaimed "The Vagina Monologues," re-defines the word with her vibrant new masterpiece -
"Emotional Creature."
"Emotional Creature" is a theatrical work that celebrates the secret life of girls around the world. Issues such as peer pressure, identity crisis, eating disorders, teenage pregnancy, child labor, human trafficking, depression, teenage suicide and mutilation take center stage in a musical that is sure take the audience on a roller-coaster ride of emotions.
"Young women can easily connect to the stories," explains 2TinCans Philippines' Sarah Mae Enclona, the producing artistic director of "Emotional Creature" Cebu. "Parents are reminded of how vulnerable their teenage daughters are, while the rest of us remember how it is to be young and feel both insecure and invincible. Men and boys [are to] leave the theater enlightened and armed with a better understanding of the wonderful world of women and girls."
"You rarely see a play where the characters are all girls," adds cast member Pami Therese Estalilla. "Six girls of diverse cultures, belief situations, sizes, shapes, ethnicities - and they're not all given names. I imagine it might be because, as a girl or woman in the audience, you may see yourself in any one of their stories."
Joining Estalilla in "Emotional Creature" are TV5 Cebu reporter and radio news anchor Andrea Pateña, and Zee Lifestyle editor Patty Taboada. Maxi Bolongaita, Brazzy Valdez, and Charlene Virlouvet complete the cast.
As part of V-Day Cebu 2014, "Emotional Creature" is a benefit performance for the Bidlisiw Foundation, Inc.
"[The play] is just one step of a global movement looking to spread awareness and erase gender inequality and violence," adds Virlouvet. "We are not just pushing for feminism or activism, but really, for acceptance."
