Putting the Fun in Science

Justine Therese Juntilla, Masscom Intern, Univ. of San Jose - Recoletos - The Freeman

Science is commonly associated with laboratory experiments, investigatory projects, and a lot of serious studying. But, in truth, science is not only serious stuff. The subject can actually be so much fun for students.

Science is everywhere. It doesn’t operate only within the limits of the classroom. This is the concept behind “Science Works,” an interactive traveling science exhibition by the Philippine Science Centrum that aims to put the fun in science.

The exhibit, the first of its kind in the country, is now in Cebu, at the 2nd floor of Parkmall, at the Mandaue reclamation area. Galleries for Vision and Perception, Pressure, Energy, Mathematics as well as Electricity and Magnetism offer a first-hand experience on how scientific principles work and have fun in doing it. But everything inside needs an important element – and that’s the curious and inquisitive visitor!

Of the many attractions in the exhibit, many have gained popularity among the audience. One of hit attractions is the Anti-Gravity Mirror that creates the visual illusion of the person floating. Another is the Van de Graaff generator that makes for a literally hair-raising experience to anyone who steps in the booth and touches the metal ball full of static electricity. The mysterious Dark Room houses different elements that would not only tickle the mind but also excite the senses.

The “Science Works” exhibit runs until October 10.
