How to deal with class homeworks

Carlo Rivera - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - School is back and, to a very large degree, it means class works, exams, and projects. Also, it means class homeworks are here again.

During all the school days of the week, there is hardly a day without class assignments to do at home. Our parents always give encouraging words as we begin to yawn, either out of tiredness or of boredom, as we tackle a homework. It is not as simple as raising our hand at class; with a homework we’re usually on our own.

We may have to learn some methods to make doing homework not as much of a hassle for us every time. We may have to change the way we view or approach the task. We may also have to establish a homework routine.

The following ways of doing homework have proven effective with others. There’s no reason why these won’t work with us:

1. Try to understand the point of the homework. It is always hard to convince yourself to do something we don’t comprehend or are not convinced about. Think of the good learning you can get from the subject matter of the homework.

2. Discuss the homework with your parents or other knowledgeable persons around. At the beginning of each school year, sit down and talk about how to handle homework in the coming months. In this way, ground rules for getting homework done is set.

3. Think about the consequences of not doing the homework. Teachers are usually sad when kids don’t do their homework. Worst case scenario – you might get a poor grade in class. Thinking of these consequences is probably enough to get you to do the homework.

4. Ask for help if need be. Ask for help from your parents or your older siblings who might be able to guide you through a homework. Ask them to explain to you the instruction, for instance. But, homework do not ask them to do the homework for you. Remember that homework is also a way to make you develop independence and enhance your lifelong learning skills.

5. Find out what motivates you. A recent study has shown that ambition motivates kids in their education. You are more likely to knuckle down and do your homework if you have a clear idea of what you want to be after finishing your education.

6. Try to turn the homework into a game. When boredom strikes in tackling a homework, why not turn it into fun? For example, apply math problems to things in the house. Say, if you take three glasses from a set of 12 in a tray, how many glasses are left? Or, it’s 7:40 p.m. and you want to be done with a homework in 30 minutes, what’s your deadline time?

Homework is a necessary part of school life, so because it’s been proven to aid in our learning. It either reinforces a current lesson in our mind or prepares us for a coming class topic. It is there to help us – not to make life difficult for us.
