Style It

Kimberly Limpahan - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Summer is almost over. It's that time of the year again, when students get ready for school - buying school materials and planning out what to wear.

June is that month of “something new” - new hairstyle, new bags, and, if the budget allows, new gadgets, among other so-called "necessities." Perhaps one of the biggest "new" items in the must-have list, especially for girls, is a new wardrobe. And this can mean real pressure on the budget.

But not really. Those who want to achieve that girl-next-door look can still do it, even without shedding out some cash. It only requires a little mix-matching.

One thing to remember about mix-matching outfits: "Work with what you have." Jeans, skirts and dresses that are already in the closet can be worked on. Any of these can be the base or the foundation on which to begin.

Jeans

Jeans are almost a standard in the girl's closet. Denims wear comfortably, and give a cool chic style.

Jeans can practically be matched with almost anything, from the traditional tees to formal tops. For that effortless yet edgy get up, a pair of jeans and a simple tank top matched with a cozy pair of flats or sneakers is a perfect ready-to-go outfit. Most girls prefer easy-to-find, easy-to-wear garments without sacrificing style, especially when running late for school.

If a little formal look is desired, jeans will also do. Matching jeans with a formal top will give a formal-casual look. No need for flashy glittery accessories. An old sheer top or a blazer and a pair of pumps or stilettos already makes for classy fashion.

Skirt

Skirts are must-haves for girls too. One skirt can already give a variety of fashionable looks when matched with different tops - even with simple tees. And just like jeans, skirts can practically be paired with almost anything.

Skirts flash the preppy side of a girl. And it's easy to get dolled up for school by experimenting with tees, matched with a skater skirt to achieve that rocker-chic look.

Dress

Schools organize parties to welcome the students. And definitely on these times, a dress is preferable. Dresses do not just define "girliness," but it also defines a girl's style. A dress is a base piece which can be worn independently or with a match. But a dress can take on a new look when accessorized with a belt or scarf.

Accessorizing a dress up for school may not be that easy, especially with time constraints. But mix-and-matching a dress with accessories is fun and exciting, and is the best part in styling.

By itself, a dress because it is simply a slip-on outfit - and can be worn as it is. For girls who want to keep it on the formal side, blazers or cardigans would give the dress a sophisticated flair. Depending on how it is accented with accessories, an old dress can still be as elegant as a new one. It only takes a little playing with colors and pops of jewelries. Small details can really make a big change to the overall outfit with a touch of imagination.

A little wardrobe tweak, a little creativity and a pinch of personal taste can turn those out-of-fashion outfits into trendy pieces. Styling for school need not be expensive. It is just a matter of playing with the items that are available and putting them together to create a new style. (FREEMAN)
