The pineapple advantage

Ma. Evelyn Tuisa and Mae Claudine Teves - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Pineapple is quite a common fruit in this tropical country. It’s both a popular thirst quencher and a favorite dessert after meals. It is not only sought for its sweet taste, but also for its health value.

The fruit has many beneficial nutrients that can boost the immune system and prevent certain ailments such as hypertension and cancer. It can also treat intestinal worms, act as anti-inflammatory agent, as well as relieve pain.

Important vitamins and minerals such as thiamin, riboflavin, Vitamin B-6, folate, magnesium, manganese, beta-carotene etc. are found in abundant amounts in pineapples. Of course, pineapples are also rich in Vitamin C, which is necessary for strengthening the immune system, so that the body can battle effectively against various illnesses. Vitamin C is vital in preventing ear infections, colds and flu.

But one of the most significant nutrients in pineapples is the bromelain. It is a mixture of enzymes found naturally in the juice and stem of pineapples. Bromelain is believed to help with the digestion of protein. It is also said to reduce extreme inflammation and thickening of the blood, and preclude certain types of tumor growth when taken as regular dietary supplement.

The abundant antioxidants in pineapples effectively help fight against possible cancer cells. It also delays the natural process of cell deterioration. Antioxidants also help a lot in bringing down cholesterol levels in order to avoid heart problems and other such ailments.

The beta-carotene in pineapples is known for both its sight-saving and anti-carcinogenic properties. It improves vision particularly in those who have macular degeneration – a condition where adults lose their vision due to ageing.

Considering its many nutrients, the pineapple is definitely not just an ordinary fruit but, in fact, quite a royalty in the fruit kingdom.
