Etiquette on Conversation

MANNERS MATTER - Honey Jarque Loop - The Freeman

One of the most important qualities for social acceptance is the ability to converse. There are two kinds of conversation - polite and real. An attentive person knows how to do both.

Polite conversation is to be carried with people who start to talk to you at check-out counters in supermarkets, at the airport lounge or in doctors' waiting rooms. It is always polite to respond whenever someone speaks to you. Some people talk to others for reassurance or because they are lonely.

You will not find it difficult to engage in polite conversation if your motivation is simply to be kind. A few sentences are all that's necessary in order not to appear rude.

To be a good conversationalist, one must be informed on life in general. There is no excuse for not keeping current on the main stream of our lives, including local and national events. You do not have to be a member of the elite, much traveled jet set to be up-to-date. But you do have to read and listen a lot.

It also helps to become an expert in at least one field, so that someone conversing with you will receive some nice answer to the perfunctory question, "What are you up to these days?"

Whatever your profession or hobby, try to be able to describe your field intelligently, without embarrassment. But don't make it so refined and specialized that you can talk about nothing else. Once your language becomes so technical, no one will understand you or, worse, even want to understand you. And whatever your line of interest is, be interested to learn about the other person's as well.

A good and varied vocabulary is one of the most impressive assets a person can have. A plain sentence is just like a plain dress; it is more attractive when properly accessorized. Add a rich sounding word here, an amusing, delightful and appropriate word there, and the sentence becomes more polished and refined than it would be otherwise.

Foreign words, unless you pronounce them perfectly, should not be used, especially around people who do not know their meaning. You run the risk of being misunderstood.

Never over dramatize trivial incidents in your life, unless there is a lull in the conversation and unless you are a comedian.

Don't tell dirty jokes. A person who gets attention by telling off-color stories is also telling the world that he or she is a very insecure individual trying to impress or gain attention.

Do not pry into someone's personal life, even if rumors have been printed in the papers or doing the rounds in coffee shops.

Never question a person's marital status, or ask personal questions on subjects like how much income he earns. Wait until he brings up the subject.

A good conversationalist is a self-confident person. He is always a desirable element at any social gathering. Underneath his wonderful gift of chatter lie two ingredients, an honest desire to please and a good sense of humor.
