Dear Dr. Jen,
I’ve been having pimples on my head for the past few months. Thank goodness I can hide my scalp with my hair. It’s very itchy and sometimes I find myself unflatteringly scratching my head in public, as if I have lice! I diligently use shampoo and conditioner everyday. Is there any product that can get rid of this breakout?
Louisa
Dear Louisa,
Scalp pimples are treated differently than facial ones. One of the main things that you have to consider is that ointments and creams might be messy on the scalp during the day and may even transfer on to your pillow at night. The key is in finding the correct preparation containing the retinol or the salicylic acid. Shampoo forms, gel or spray forms might present better penetration to the scalp. Another option to consider is taking oral forms of medication.
You may want to change to a shampoo that isn’t too strongly-fragranced and to skip using conditioner on the scalp. Conditioner can contribute to scalp pimples by blocking all the pores on the scalp and exacerbating the acne. Also, other conditions may mimic scalp acne such as seborrheic dermatitis, hair dye or hair product allergy or folliculitis infection. It is still best to have it checked by your certified PDS dermatologist.

Dear Dr. Jen,
What procedures other than surgery can make my face look younger? I’m already in my 60s and I think I may need a little help.
Myrna
Dear Myrna,
The top four non-invasive procedures that are most popular are botox, fillers, radiofrequency and fractional laser. Botox acts to temporarily freeze the muscles that cause wrinkles. However, you don’t want to look like a waxed, immobile version of yourself. So when getting botox, always express your desire for a more natural, expressive look. Botox only lasts 4-6 months and may require repeated treatments. More importantly, make sure it is a PDS dermatologist performing the procedure.
Fillers basically fill up the sunken parts of the face, such as the nasolabial folds, the cheeks and the tear trough. This usually involves making up for the fat pads that are lost because of ageing. Most fillers can last up to 12-18 months.
Radiofrequency involves collagen remodeling. Collagen production is stimulated by the RF laser. This can last up to 1-2 years. Fractional laser is good for pore reduction, fine wrinkles and an overall even-toned complexion. I find fractional laser to be great for people for all ages.
