CEBU, Philippines - Casino Español  de  Cebu club president Antonio Veloso, together with members of the board, vice president Gabriel Leyson, house chairman Ed Gonzalez, secretary Edgar Chiongbian, treasurer David Chan, director for cultural and social affairs Paco Jarque and director for sports Louie Moro were on hand to warmly greet members and their guests to an evening with guest of honor, Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Jorge Domecq.

Veloso, in his brief welcome remarks, explained that the  Dia, as it is popularly known, has been celebrated by the club since it’s founding in 1920 and that it continues to promote Spanish culture through the clubs various activities.

Ambassador Domecq, for his part, thanked Casino for relentlessly promoting Spanish heritage and culture that showcase art, language, cuisine, music and dances. He also touched on Spain’s  present economy  and expressed optimism that the country  would slowly recover in the coming months.

May Ocaba, the hands-on and amiable club general manager,  and Nicolas Rafols,    executive chef, masterfully planned and created an exquisite menu that consisted of a fabulous spread of picas, jamon Serrano, mixed seafood salads, baked pasta with Spanish chorizo, and the must-have paella Valenciana    baked in its own pan with saffron rice.      Mouth watering desserts specially prepared by innovative pastry chef Marvic Lomo completed the gastronomic meal.

After a splendid dinner, Jose Luis Monton, one of Spain’s recognized flamenco guitarists, performed a series of guitar selections including his own compositions that completely impressed the audience. Driven by his passion and energy for flamenco music, Monton draws from it the inspiration for his creations. The performance was made possible through the cooperation of the Spanish Embassy and the Instituto  de  Cervantes.
