Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - While the general theme of Images of Motherhood – as an art exhibit – can’t be described as something new, its overall execution remains to be distinct, an attribute which the members of Cebu Artists Incorporated (CAI) have become masters of.

Celebrating its opening last May 24 in the Department of Foreign Affairs office in the 4th Level of the Pacific Metro Mall in Mandaue, Images of Motherhood is the organization’s fourth group exhibition this year, celebrating and honoring mothers from different walks of life.

Taking a passive-active stance in the presentation of its featured pieces, the exhibit is not exactly primed towards causing shifts in artistic status quos, but it does well in doing away with the pangs of preserved pretense.

Highlighting oil paintings, mixed-media pieces and pen & ink illustrations, the show works and expounds on a fact which everyone knows by heart, underlining what is not often said, but should be.

“A Promising Life” by Celso Pepito, one of Images of Motherhood’s featured works, brings viewers to the world of possibilities, working on a “character driven” element that is defined by its framed subjects.

Jess Dinglasa’s “Unconditional Love”, another featured piece of the show, easily tells the story of joy and sadness experienced by all mothers at certain points in life.

The pen & ink illustrations of John Dinglasa also stands out as one of Images of Motherhood’s more notable highlights, working on the aesthetic premise of “simplicity equals beauty”.

The cubist visual ideals of Jojo Sagayno, as defined by “Mama Mia I”, is also a significant addition to the show, bearing a more contemporary take in its overall appeal.

With the celebration of mothers and motherhood as its overall theme, CAI’s Images of Motherhood works on an elemental premise, one which isn’t all that meticulous to appreciate.

As an exhibit, Images of Motherhood is simply what its name implies, telling the different stories of mothers, in a way which anyone can comprehend.
