CMIC's Dancefest

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu Mary Immaculate College D. Jakosalem and Talamban Campuses concluded their annual Dance festival at the SM Activity Center last January 29.

Kids from the pre-school department, grade school and secondary level competed in three respective categories – category A (Pre-school), category B (Grades 1-4) and category C (Grade 5 to 4th year high school).

This year’s theme is retro and mod. Powwow Juveniles wowed the crowd with an affirmation that they are at the top of their game in music choice, wardrobe and production requirements. The Nursery and K-1 pupils of Jakosalem campus, who were donned in floral prints and butterfly costumes dancing to music 40 years before they were born, was an over the top accomplishment. They won first place for Category A. Grade Two of Talamban Campus beat their seniors for Category B. They danced to Westlife’s “Uptown Girl” and Hanson’s “Mmmbop” as if they existed during the premiere releases. Finally, high school students of Jakosalem campus beat their Talamban competitors for the top spot in Category C. The victors presented an MTV style audio-visual performance that was very hip, young, assertive and no-holds-barred tough. Their culture-clashed costume inspired from a mix of Egyptians, ancient Mayans and nomadic/barbaric warriors that segued to a flirtatious teen style wardrobe was remarkable. All in all, 17 groups vied for the win.

Dancefest was hosted by Mary Rose Villacastin-Maghuyop. The judges were Jesus Longinos – PE professor of Asian College of Technology, Rose Jane Arreza – PE teacher of the University of Cebu- Main Secondary Department and this writer.
