Starry, starry night

- Stacy Danika S. Alcantara -

CEBU, Philippines - Consider this Van Gogh masterpiece remastered and rendered on your peepers. We're talking about pitch black seamlessly illuminated by midnight blue and shimmering, dark purple towards the edges reflecting the glittering speckles that are the stars. Straight off from Rodarte's 2012 runway, this look is perfect for either cool days or warm nights, contrary to popular belief that warm summer nights are only fit for dewy looks.

Sometimes, your overused sooty black shadow may be a little bit too dark for the festivities post-New Year. Rather, Sinulog weeks, the mystical peacock plumage hues of midnight blue and celestial purple worked with magic into an entirely new interpretation of the smoky eye is something you will thank the heavens you've mastered.

Here's your ultimate cheat sheet on how to create those starry, starry eyes.

A. Prime

1.Prep the skin by applying a tinted moisturizer that's closest to your skin tone, followed by a skin primer of your choice. Dab some lip primer on your lips as well to allow your lip color to pop later on. For the skin, you may also opt to simply prep the skin with BB Cream for a smooth, blemish-free finish.

2.Carefully heat your metal eye lash curlers with a blow-dryer until it's tolerably hot. Curl the lashes three times from the base, the middle part, and then the tip for a more natural looking curl before sweeping on the first coat of mascara.

B. Base

1.Apply a thin layer of liquid foundation on your face. Remove any excess foundation using a cosmetic sponge for a more natural finish.

2.Using a concealer pen, hide dark under-eye circles and discolorations by warming the concealer pen with your fingers as you gently apply it on the desired areas to erase any signs of imperfection.

3.Create a matte base for your eye shadow by applying a touch of concealer on your lids from the lash line to the brow bone.

4.Set the foundation using powder on the focus area of the face-in this case, your eyes.

C. Eyes

1.Apply a black liquid liner carefully under the lower lash line using an angled eye shadow brush. Make sure you have a steady hand for this.

2.Press purple eye shadow on the existing lower lash eyeliner using a flat brush.

3.Using a purple eyeliner pencil, apply the liner over your upper lid to provide a base for your eye shadow. Blend it out softly with a brush or your finger above the socket line.

4.Use a large, flat shading brush to set the eye pencil base with your purple shadow.

5.Create a unique smoky shade by applying black shadow to the outer edge of the eye and blending it just past the socket line.

6.Pick up a shimmering shade of midnight blue eye shadow to add a spritz of color right at the inner corners of the eye.

7.Sweep a beige or natural shade of eye shadow through the socket line using a contour brush.

8.Create a nice, crisp line from the inner corner of the eye, tapering it towards the outer edges by using a fine brush to line the upper lid with black liquid liner.

9.Apply black eyes shadow at the outer edges of the eye line for added intensity.

10.Apply a couple of coats of mascara on the outer lashes and just one coat on the lower lashes.

D. Brows

1. Using a clean mascara wand, comb the brows upward and outward and then define the brows with an eyebrow pencil that's closest to the color of your brows.

2. Set unruly brows in place using a clear mascara to act as a gel.

E. Cheeks

1.Apply bronzer as a contoured blush using a contour brush.

2.Highlight the top of the cheekbones using a soft pink blush.

F. Lips

1. With the drama all on your eyes, downplay the lips by sweeping on a nice nude shade of lip color. (FREEMAN)
