Bright drive

- Lola Elyang -

CEBU, Philippines - A paper drive meant to encourage environmental stewardship among kids of the well-to-do, through active participation in the reduction of solid waste piling up at our dumpsites saw the fulfillment of its first stage last August 19 in a program at the Playhouse and BRIGHT Academy in Banilad, Cebu City.

A symbolic weighing of recyclable paper waste took place. Grade III-Gratitude and Second Year-Valor were recognized, as well, for their efforts having the most kilograms of paper collected.

In partnership with the Community Uniting for Green Environment, the paper will be utilized in handicraft industries that provide livelihood opportunities to unemployed mothers in the city’s mountain barangays. This was revealed by Miss Charmaine Ong and Neil Huele of CUGE.

Teacher Neal Montesclaros of Playhouse and BRIGHT Academy said that the funds raised through the year-long campaign will be used in carrying out charity works under the school’s NEAR project. This stands for Neighbor Enriching Activities and Reachout.

“The world has evolved. Who could have taught that segregation would become a new skill essential among today’s crop of learners,” Teacher Neal said.

“So we educate our students by integrating segregation into their lessons as a basic skill to be learned.”

“It’s common knowledge that we have students from mostly of upper-class families. The campaign is directed at educating these rich kids and starting a mission. That way, we would be able to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor,” Teacher Neal added.

“Saving paper saves a tree saves the environment” is the drive’s theme.
