Unlimited Living in Limited Space

CEBU, Philippines - "Scale must be considered in every building, a scale that is of the epoch, a measure of the spirit, a measure of the technical means and forces at our disposal." – Le Corbusier, one of the pioneers of modern architecture.

Imagine living in a house as big as a typical parking space for one car. Now, that's not exactly the house you've been waiting a whole life for, right?

But for Yasuhiro Yamashita, it may very well be your dream house.

Yamashita is an award winning architect from Tokyo, Japan, who's known for his detailed work in utilizing space to the extreme with sophisticated results. His architecture is based on the system of society, the environment and the function.

In a 2010 interview, the architect said, "People tend to think of homes simply in terms of floor space. We architects think in 3-D."

Tokyo's increasing trend for ultra compact housing or kyo-sho-jutaku has caught on especially for those who do not have a big budget, making it livable and contemporary is up to architects like Yamashita.

His work is arguably the most visible structures in this field of architecture, his dramatic reconfiguration of existing space brought him viral fame and architectural prestige globally.

Midway through his career, Yamashita came up with the idea of “low cost” buildings. With this, he started collaborating with good structural engineers who helped him in reducing costs by changing the construction system.
