Meandering in Malapascua
CEBU, Philippines - It has been four years, I realized, since I last visited the island of Malapascua. And in that span of time, one would think that there are significant changes that northern isle must have undergone. Well, having its own power and water supply is a major come-on but other than that, thankfully, this little island it just the way I remembered it to be—an absolute getaway!
Finding a place to stay in this northern paradise is a no-brainer, especially when you have family residing there. Appropriately labeled Pilar’s Residence, my Tita Pilar Pilapil’s resort has come to its full bloom since its opening some five years ago. Nestled in the quiet hamlet of Linaw, her main abode is perched on a hillside overlooking two private white sand coves. This houses two main rooms and the spacious attic is divided into smaller nooks.
In between coves, at the foot of the hill stands another structure that serves as the resort’s restaurant, souvenir shop and a couple more rooms. This is also where you can lounge for the rest of the day in the arms of natural wonders!
As this was my return to this fabled island, I set time to re-experience what it has to offer. By sundown, I along with my travel companions ventured to the main strip of Sitio Lugon. This is the heart of the isle as international restaurants, dive shops, quaint resorts and local pubs are collectively located. And on this particular summer weekend, the town-center was abuzz with many events.
Though I had all the energy to flutter from one venue to another that evening, my yen for relaxation prevailed. Thus after a hefty dinner and a couple of cocktails, we headed back to our very private retreat to retire with the hopes of catching the first light that touches on our side of the island.
(Malapascua is on the tip of northern Cebu accessible by land from the City to the small barangay of Maya in the Municipality of Daan Bantayan. From there, scheduled boats ferry to Lugon.
