How to be a MAKE-UP Pro 101

- Fiona Patricia S. Escandor -

CEBU, Philippines - Sometimes, people fail to recognize that applying make-up is also an art. It’s not always about who’s wearing the thickest foundation or what brand of eyeliner you have on, but rather it is about beautifying one’s self, using an array of colors and different techniques.

Just like other art forms, it is a skill that can be learned by anyone who has the passion for it. One doesn’t even have to go to school to learn it (though a formal education would definitely help), but it’s really experience that will make you master the craft.

There are alternative ways to learn how to apply make-up. For instance, Korina Estrada, who admits to being “quite young in the industry,” realized that she has the aptitude for this field because of a certain video tutorial she saw on YouTube. Yes, you read that right – YouTube.

She was inspired to grab the brush and color palette after seeing a video of Michelle Phan, who wasn’t so popular back then, but is now a celebrity make-up artist. It has only been a year since Korina started but already, she can whip up remarkable color combinations and match them well to a person and to whatever occasion that person is attending. Then, to further broaden her experiences, she worked as a make-up artist for school-based fashion shows and photo shoots.

“Make-up tutorials help a lot. They don’t teach people how to look beautiful. But, they inspire people to be beautiful. Make-up is only a supplementary thing. What’s important is what’s on the inside and how you look at the world. If you feel beautiful...everything will follow.”

Aside from Michelle Phan, Korina also looks up to other YouTube personalities, such as Lauren Luke (panacea81) and Leesha (xsparkage). She is also a fan of our very own Jessie Glova.

“I believe that every makeup artist puts him/herself in his/her art,” Korina said. In her case, she is starting to develop a style of her own. She is particularly fond of defining the eyes with thick and winged eyeliner. “This creates a look that would bring the audience to notice the eyes of the model because I believe that the eyes reveal a lot of someone’s personality.”

“I’m still learning more about make-up. I think I’m getting there and I intend to make it a career when I’m experienced enough.” She is currently planning to study how to do hairstyles to further complement her make-up skills. I believe she’ll find some tutorial videos about that on the net. Try searching for them on YT – who knows? Just like Korina Estrada, these videos may just help you find your niche in the make-up industry. Or at least, give you awesome tips for looking fabulous on your next night out! ?
