coopCENTRUM is the consortium of 17 cooperatives with the support of two national cooperative federations: VICTO National and the Philippine Cooperative Central Fund Federation. In 2002, some cooperators were sent to Canada for an immersion in a cooperative market. Later in 2004, the exposure was followed by another experience in Sweden where the group was introduced to the organization and operation of a local successful cooperative supermarket called consume-store. This enticed them to open the first coop-owned and operated chain of supermarket in the country, which is said to be five years in the making.
Now in full swing, coopCENTRUM is a fully-stocked grocer which is not exclusive to member-cooperators but rather to the general public. Members of the 17 cooperatives instantly get a one percent discount upon purchase.
“There are other supermarkets in other countries that are run by coops. We have actually seen successful coop supermarkets in other countries. They turned out to be successful because they are patronized by their members. coopCENTRUM is very viable to succeed since we have almost 100,000 members and counting,” said coopCENTRUM chair Doris Cañares.
“We work for profit to sustain our social objective hence reducing the prices of our goods so that our members will enjoy our products everyday instead of waiting for the dividend given every end of the year,” she concluded.
