14 countries join World DanceSport Open
DanceSport as a spectator sport was an entertaining treat as DanceSport athletes from 14 countries joined the 4th DanceSport sa Sugbu & 2009 Cebu IDSF (International DanceSport Federation) World DanceSport Open Latin & Standard at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino Grand Ballroom.
The dance athletes wore glittery, flowing gowns and dancing shoes and grooved to the Latin dances of Chachacha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive and the Standard dances of Slow Waltz, Tango, Vienese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep.
Foreigners from Russia, Germany, Bulgaria, Slovenia, UK, Hongkong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, China and local tourists from the Philippines cities of Metro Manila, Tacurong City, General Santos City, Dumaguete City, Davao City, Cagayan de Oro City, Zamboanga City and Samar, Leyte joined the event.
In the Latin discipline, Cebuana Charlea Lagaras and her long-time partner Steve Vergara emerged the biggest winners as champions of the Adult A-Closed Asia and the IDSF Open categories. Another Cebuana, Dearlie Gerodias, and her partner John Errole Melencio, bagged the second prize as Norwille Damasin and Joana Niña Marciano won third in the Adult A-Closed Asia. Bulgaria’s Petrov Genadi and Ilieva Vanina won second while Gerodias and Melencio got third for the IDSF Open.
In the modern standard IDSF Open category, Hong Kong’s Faye Hung and Pietro del Bello claimed gold with Bulgaria’s Stela Kukonova and German Tepavicharov silver and China’s Yuan Cheng Jun and Su Na bronze. In the closed Asia category, Jaime Sarmiento and Maria Cristina Nguyen won gold, Karla and Brian Ocaña won silver and Ana and Joel Madera won bronze..
