Rock 'n' Folk

CEBU, Philippines - Hairstyles have utterly gone out of the box in this age where creativity has gone full blown. Music even, being the origin of style, is used this time as an inspiration of hairstyle trends. A hairstyle inspired by rock and roll? Possible! Let the music junkie rejoice as her much-deserved hair makeover is reminiscent of a music icon.

As part of its centenary celebration, L’Oreal Professionel rolled out its newest collection that embodies the iconic musical worlds as clearly presented in hair colors and hair cuts — the Rock ‘n’ Folk collection. Let the musical extravaganza begin!

Do you want it edgy, bold yet fab like the Gwen Stefani look? Then ROCK is for you. Be it Pink, Elvis Presley, Brian Setzer (from Stray Cats) or Amy Winehouse, name it, it’s possible now. We often see Rihanna-inspired hairstyles these days with red highlights and what-nots that look sleek and modern. It’s still part of the Rock collection that basically uses striking colors such as orange, violet, yellow and red, either for base color or highlights. Short cuts are defined as exaggeratedly short at the nape of the neck and at the sides, and still with the use of the layering technique; while for long hair, the layering technique is being used and don’t forget the curls, as well.

Folk singers Tracy Chapman, Sheryl Crowe, Taylor Swift, among others, and militant Joan Baez are the icons for the Folk collection – soft, subdued and sophisticated, that is. We’ll see mid-length hair inspired by the 70s, bobbed cuts with hair cut short showing off the shoulders and neck. For the long hair cut, the one-length technique is used. Neutral/natural colors are dominant in Folk, say platinum, yellow, blonde, mahogany, etc.

Two creative hairdressers from Paris have interpreted this Fall/Winter 2009 Collection, namely: Yannick d’Is (Rock) and Marc Lopez (Folk). L’Oreal Professionel Malaysia artistic ambassador Andy Chan of Hair Studio Salon, JB Malaysia, as well as L’Oreal Professionel portfolio artist Francis Lee of Bridges Salon in JY Square, Lahug showcased their interpretations suited for the Asian market in a fashion (hairstyle) show cum live demo at the Activity Area of Elizabeth Mall.

Hair Care Tips from the Experts

Both Chan and Lee emphasized that using the right hair product is key to a problem-free hair. Hair experts can provide guidance on product use. Hair treatment must be done regularly to spare one from having damaged hair. Lastly, blow-drying is not after all a no-no hence it’ll make your hair less frizzy!
