Justin Jee Conquers Cebu

-

CEBU, Philippines - A lot of the Cebuanos who attended the piano concert at the MBF Press Center in Lahug did not expect a lean young man, looking more like a teenager, to tackle the classical pieces on the program. Yet, the audience was in for a very pleasant surprise. For although 21-year-old Justin is definitely young, his prowess on the ivory keys left everyone in awe of his prodigious talent.

Classical melodies from the masters, from Hayden to Francis Poulenc, were dished out effortlessly by this Chinese-American who harvested gold in his younger years in such prestigious competitions as the Southern California Junior Bach Festival. No wonder he was given a standing ovation and had to oblige to clamors for more, after his final piece.

Indeed, the venue was filled beyond capacity that night – the aisles were also used for additional seats – by music aficionados of all ages, from all walks of life. They marveled at Justin’s genius on the keyboard, not knowing that this young man is a (Biology major) senior at Yale University, at the same time taking up Music (in Chamber Music and piano). Now, that is astoundingly marvelous.

The Arts Council of Cebu was really honored to have taken part of the concert which was sponsored by the Enrique Benedicto Family. Kudos to a successful undertaking. More of these inspiring happenings, especially for our youth to emulate.(M.A.Tan)
