Tick Tack Overclock

- Jen F. Vega -

CEBU, Philippines – Cebuano techies converged at the SM City Cebu Entertainment Plaza not to go head to head with fellow enthusiasts in a virtual war game, but for an overclocking face off – the Asus Ultimate Overclocking Show.

Overclocking refers to a method of tweaking the computer hardware for it to perform above its designated level, increasing its efficiency and speed. With this process, an OC (overclocker) can increase the performance of a 2 gigahertz processor to 2.4 – 2.6 gigahertz.

Two teams from Sugbo Elite Overclockers, the only overclocking club in Cebu, showed off their skills in the showdown in the latest AMD-based motherboard, M4A79-T and Intel Core i7 board – Rampage II Gene, competing for the highest percent of overclocking, CPU Mhz, Bclock, memory speed, 3DMark Vantage score in the overclocked system and highest Super PI. Asus also provided each team with memory from OCZ, Caviar Black hard disks from Western Digital, Sunbeam coolers, Silverstone power supply and cordless mouse and keyboard from Logitech, while Microsoft Corporation provided the operating systems (OS).

“Our motherboards are overclocking-friendly, meaning we have the tools that overclockers are looking for in order for them to achieve it. From now on, most of our products will come with overclocking features, even for the mid-end level and mainstream models. Were making overclocking accessible to everyone,” enthused Jason Teh, ASUS Technology Pte. Limited Marketing Deputy Head. He and his team decided to hold the competition in metro Cebu since they found a community of overclockers here, the Sugbo Elite Overclockers headed by Ryan Yu of Tech Island, a show in RCTV Channel 36 (also the event host). “This is our first time to hold it here instead in Manila (where there’s no group there). We want to support this group because they are our opinion makers, they can critique our brand, they might say our brand is much easier to overclock than the competition. Since we have been the number one motherboard maker in the world, hence this is our expertise,” Teh added.

The audience went home with goodies from event sponsors while the OC teams got P50,000 worth of cash and hardware. The show was the highlight of the Asus Ultimate PC fair. Interested to learn the ropes in overclocking? Visit www.mytechisland.blogspot.com.
