Making the cut

CEBU, Philippines – What’s the point of sporting this season’s latest threads if you don’t have the haircut to boot? Runway trends are telling us that this season will be all about the extremes—simply nothing in between. Think of bobs and long, flowing tresses if you must.

If in 2008 a plethora of women opted to cut their hair shorter and shorter (this is not because of global warming, mind you), maintaining the same ‘do could slowly ease you out of the fashion forward crowd and into a bucket of Chihuahua donning pixie-cut late comers. This leaves you with two options: keep the bobs and blend in or cut ‘em shorter/grow them longer and stand out.

Here’s a rundown of the cuts that’ll make the cut this season. Read on if you’ve chosen to be a fashion forward femme.

Shorter, shorter

The cropped bob is only for those who ooze confidence. After all, what’s the point of donning this ‘do if you’re just going to traipse around town covering it up with a hat? The cropped bob, as the name implies, is way shorter than your good ‘ol pixie and bob cuts. It’s short all over, blunt cut fringe included. For a rather conservative society (though many of us just won’t admit it) like ours, this ‘do is bound to have eyes staring and heads turning.

Shorter pa jud

This cut popped out in 2008 and it’s no wonder that it’s making a bold comeback this 2009. The pixie crop takes the cropped bob to the next level by really getting all out with the scissors and coming out with a fiercer and funkier ‘do. The pixie crop will definitely be a scene stealer so you’ll want to get a master stylist if you want to pull-off this trend. The cut could either go two ways: with the right touch, you could come out as one femme fatale. Screw it up and you’ll look like the school principal who’s had a bad hair day since she was born.

Going Long

Okay, so maybe the cropped bob and the pixie crop are a little over the top for you and you’re also the kind of person who doesn’t want to settle with last season’s ye olde bob. This leaves us with long, lush, shampoo-ad worthy tresses.   Take your cue from many of this season’s runway ‘dos by styling and layering your long tresses and own the look completely. Bobs and pixie cuts may not be for everyone. Long hair, on the other hand has always been a huge hit among Pinoys.

If you’re not naturally straight, wear your hair in heavy, voluminous, wavy locks fit for the exotic and globally-inspired trends (bohemian included). You can also go for the sleek and straight ‘do by parting it in the middle and keeping it simple. Take a trip to the 40’s with rolling waves and a classic side part.

The tricky thing about trying out a new ‘do for a new season is in finding out which ‘do works best for you. With a swig of confidence and the right threads to boot, you can bet your bottom you can pull off whatever haircut you—and your stylist—think you were born to sport.
