SpeechCom's culminating activity

PEOPLE PLACES - Flor S. YNCLINO -

The yearly summer program for speech and related courses for kinder, nursery, graders and high school students of SpeechCom International had its culminating activity last April 30 at the Sacred Heart Center. SpeechCom guru Dr. Mila C. Espina and her staff prepared a well-balanced repertoire of songs, dances, recitations, orations and declamations in all levels, spiced with choreography.

It was a moment of self-confidence exposure on stage for the participants and fulfillment of parents who gave their children moral support. Dr. Espina stressed that the two-week program is a reinforcement of their lessons in their respective schools or an initial step in developing the communication skills of the students. SpeechCom has been in existence since 1976.

We didn’t know that Solita Saldaña is back in Cebu until I met her at a cousin’s birthday party three weeks ago. She has her ballet school, Turning Point School of Ballet and Music, located at the Arcade 5 of Montebello Villa Hotel in Banilad. Sol is the artistic director while Mylene Saldana is co-artistic director; Norma S. Borromeo is managing director and Kim S. Borromeo is administrative assistant.

Turning Point School of Ballet and Music is a ballet school where students get the best instruction and training. It adopts the Philippine National Syllabus to suit the physique of the Filipino Ballerina.

Ballet develops and enhances good posture and graceful movement. It helps promote coordination, fitness, a sense of rhythm, musicality, self expression and self esteem by stimulating the mind’s creativity. Likewise, it awakens one’s awareness to music and movement – a beautiful fusion that entertains and educates. Most of all, ballet is fun! It opens up to children a world of friendship, forming a rich source of happy memories.

In dancing, children explore and discover the beauty of movement and rhythm. They develop body awareness through creative vision, an important dance element.

Dancing makes one feel good, both emotionally and physically. It is a natural expression of rhythm. Encouraging children to dance at an early age will stimulate in them the value of self confidence, good posture, a sense of style, concentration and discipline….qualities that will become an important part of their adult life.
