Moda Mardi Gras

- Bobit S. Avila -

Swaying to the rhythmic beat of the drums, revelers will have fun in the sun as the order of the day. However, comfort merged with style is a must. So don’t call it a greatest-hits collection, but assembled here are most-loved silhouettes for pre-summer.

Among the versatile offerings are flowing dresses (short and maxi in plain and prints), cropped  cotton tees, khaki clamdiggers, comfy separates (dolman sleeved tops and short shorts), Jackie O shades for one’s precious peepers, and cozy footwear like rubber flip-flops and sneakers. For men, a wide array of cropped linen cotton blend button down shirts, stretch cotton neutral colored tees, slouchy tuxedo pants straight from the boys’ section, colored drawstrings, the modern cut denims (straight and bleached), Chuck Taylors and the basic leather sandals. The angular, sometimes aggressive yet easy tailoring was a carryover from the ultra basics while experiments with contrasting paneling on minis and peg-leg pants hinted at what we hear is a “techy” lineup that includes body bags (slings and backpacks).

For pre-summer (read: mardi gras season), most designers and retail brands were inspired by Rome’s palazzos and its gardens. Flower prints decorated everything from dresses to the stretchy cotton fabric of a standout top. Also visible are stark whites and nutty neutrals. Embellishments notwithstanding, this was a grounded collection, with a focus on day looks like maxi dresses with ribbon belts. Keeping in that practical vein, stylists also decreed a contemporary line with pieces that adhere to an equilibrium of comfort and style totaling to fun in the sun to the max!
