Perpetual Succour Hospital’s pride, Dr. Rhodette Enriquez-Arevalo and Ms. Mary Pearly Pulgo won first place during the Philippine Society of Echocardiography’s 15th annual convention paper presentation contest held last October 16 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila.

Dr. Arevalo wrote a case report entitled, “The Case of a Real Nowhere Man: A Rare Case of A Single Coronary Artery and a Coronary-Pulmonary Artery Fistula in an 18-year old male with Systemic Lupus.” The case report referred to a rare coronary artery anomaly occurring in less than 0.3 percent of all patients with congenital heart disease. The winning paper was co-authored by one of Perpetual Succour Hospital’s (PSH) esteemed doctors, Dr. Jane Galang, who is an Active Cardiology Consultant and the Assistant Head of the Non-Invasive Section of the Heart Institute of PSH.

The paper was chosen as one of the four finalists out of the 12 entries from different hospitals in the country, among them the Philippine Heart Center, Philippine General Hospital and St. Luke’s Medical Center. In an eight-minute presentation, Dr. Arevalo discussed how echocardiography played a role in the case diagnosis, while Ms. Pulgo highlighted the different echocardiographic techniques used.

Dr. Arevalo is a Cardiology Fellow at PSH where she finished her Residency Training in Internal Medicine. She graduated from the Cebu Institute of Medicine, was the best debator during the Philippine Heart Association’s annual convention last year, and was once one of the Ten Most Outstanding Students of the Philippines in Region 7. Ms. Pulgo, a registered nurse, is currently the Head Nurse of the Cardiovascular Laboratory of PSH who won 2nd place for the Philippine Society of Echocardiography convention’s interesting case presentation contest in 2003 together with Dr. Carolyn Fermin-Kho, who is now an active cardiology consultant in PSH.

Such persons typify the kind of healthcare professionals you will meet at Perpetual Succour Hospital - individuals who are not only competent, but also have the vocation to provide you with the compassionate and holistic quality care, that is the PSH difference.
