East Meets West

- Bobit S. Avila -

Cementing its image as Cebu’s ultimate lifestyle arena, the Northwing of SM City Cebu, scored another coup de grace hosting the 6th International Forum of the United Nations World Tourism Organization. Close to a hundred delegates from different countries were in for an early Christmas treat as the Fashion Council of Cebu presented their holiday wear inspired by the rich cultures that shape our bustling metropolis. The luxurious Atrium was propped up with satellite stages and interconnected runways to give special guests a better view.

A glorious meeting between the Orient and its western neighbors (with the age of internet and faster than the speed of sound Concorde flights, our planet literally is one global village) resulted in a couture par excellence collection of Arcy Gayatin, Albert Arriba and Jun Escario.

It was 70s Americana for the innovative Arcy Gayatin as Halston-esque teal and steel grey stretch jersey pantsuit-clad amazons sashayed the runway to the tune of American Woman as they were joined by more glamazons in long and lean dresses in the same mould. A small detailing around the waist resulted in peplum-ed lines that carved natural womanly curves. Stylized tousled hair, silver clasps and spiked heels, the collection was very chic, very modern.

Albert Arriba looked back in to the bygone era of the 50s and 60s when Jackie Kennedy reigned supreme with her empire cut pouf dresses, opulent gowns and rich fabrics in color, texture and sheen. The resilient stylist cum designer splurged on elegance and creativity.

Enfant terrible Jun Escario created quite a stir as his ultra short silk dresses with exquisite embroidery was declared as Chinois-derived, a far cry from the conservative cheongsam. It came out very contemporary with its away from the body silhouette and superb styling.

Bravissimo!
