Down Avenue Q

- By: Kristalle Garcia-Kekert -

Opting for something out of the ordinary, a good night out was a “trip” down to one of the hottest, funniest and most original monster hit musicals I had ever seen, Avenue Q!

This adult musical is based on a street in downtown New York lived in by puppets and actors. The show opens with Princeton searching for a reasonably priced flat in a new neighbourhood. There he starts his new life, stuck with weird neighbors and friends, and with no money. Princeton believes that life may be troublesome for a few, so desperately seeking a “purpose” in life is the only way to success.

Princeton and 12 other characters sing hits such as “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist,” “The Internet Is For Porn” and “It Sucks To Be Me,” a few songs that have successfully made the play a memorable one. Avenue Q’s adult content (and highly recommended for over 18s only) consists of bad language and “full PUPPET nudity,” which viewers thought was funny rather than disgusting!

A journey of self-discovery, this musical has a lot of universal issues that many people can relate to. I liked the fact that each character is designed so uniquely and the singing was absolutely brilliant, too!

At its heart, Avenue Q is about saying that “we all go through the same kind of struggles and uncertainties, but eventually, we will all find our way and make it through because life is what you make of it.”

What a wonderful surprise we had put ourselves into! Although extremely vulgar, I have to admit that I did enjoy my trip down Avenue Q!
