Pasigarbo sa Sugbo

THEDANCE&THENSOME - Michaed Dax Barlaan -

Time went by so fast for the 33 out-of-town contingents and host Mandaue City as Pasigarbo sa Sugbo, a festival of festivals street dance competition, was held successfully last August 9 at the CICC.

Mere words could not define the grandeur of the whole artistic pageantry as a showcase, a potpourri of sorts, ranging from the display of imaginative costumes and colossal props, paraded onstage and on the streets commencing at the intersection of Mandaue City Hall, St. Joseph Parish and Cortez Hospital.

The objective was to promote what the town or city has to offer - its flora, fauna resources, history, legend, products, occupation, belief, food - name it, you have it. The most unique presentation got the plum prize.

This in mind, Palawod Festival of Bantayan bested the competition. Included in the top eight were Haladaya Festival (Daanbantayan), Siloy Festival (Alcoy), Ani-anihan (Tabuelan), Banig (Badian), Tostado (Santander), Sinamay (Carmen) and Soli-Soli Festival (San Francisco).

The presentations were very entertaining. The top victors took visual display and festival concept to their advantage, seconded by clean-cut choreography. Sometimes, costuming can really make a difference! Other contingents who incorporated glaring elements of the Sinulog didn’t make it to the top eight. However, the street dance competition was won by Daanbantayan, followed by Utanon festival (Dalaguete), Sinamay, Siloy and Mantawi (Mandaue).

Pasigarbo reached an all-time high in every aspect of the word, cost included. It, however, fell short of drawing a very large crowd to the venue. A bigger than life production like this should have an audience comparable to our Sinulog. Nevertheless, production was at its best. Thanks to director Junjet Primor.

Happy Anniversary, dear Province!
