Sensationsal

- Bobit S. Avila -

The future is bright. And the future is now! Even with the oil prices in an accelerated rate, influx of cheap and China-made retail, the threat of melting polar ice caps due to excessive carbon emission causing global warming and innumerable paranoia-inducing  facts  (or fiction),  University of the Philippines alumnus Salvador Malto is in high spirits.

In sync with the University of the Philippines’ Centennial celebration, Salvador Malto unveiled dazzling hues clutched from the color wheel. In our exclusive post-show tête-à-tête, he confided his thoughts on his most recent coup de grace.

“The new line is radical as it brightens up and moves with the fast pace of fashion today,” he quipped. Rewind to seasons ago and he did an all-jersey LBD’s which flew out of his shelves faster than you can say his name. Recently came the ultra-bright hues reminiscent of the 80s for which the designer shamelessly admit being an 80s boy. Fashion, after all, is all about metamorphosis, one thing turning into another.

Known for his knack of making serious clothes that manage to be both prim and ladylike and youthfully chic, the recent line had a brief courtship with the color wheel and produced a well edited collection of handcrafted fluid and architectural basics. It’s all dresses and this designer takes conventional silhouettes then retools them into something a bit edgier in spirit.

Dipped in intense shades, Sal employed an almost mad number of stitches and gatherings and a straightforward jersey dress turns into a slinky stunner. Most are folded, draped and tucked to resemble huge blossoms of florandia worthy for Alice’s attention in Wonderland. Bravissimo, Salvador Malto!
