The Niño to my Rescue

- Rachelle Marie Gutierrez Dangin -

I wasn’t that much of a devotee to Sto. Niño before.

I was just a kid who frequented the Basilica and joined the procession because my parents tagged me along.

But things changed when I had a hard fall from our cabinet. Here’s my story:

We had an image of Sto. Niño in our home. Mom decided to place it on top of our kitchenware cabinet to keep it out of reach of the children – that would be us.

Yes, she had to keep it away from us and our mischievous hands. But, being the naughty kid that I was, I decided to take an adventure – to climb up our cabinet.

The cabinet was divided into two parts: the one covered with a glass and the one covered with wood. A protruding area in front of our cabinet served as a division between the two parts. I positioned myself there. I had a great view from above.

As if it wasn’t enough, I made a catwalk through the jutted section, holding on to the top frame of the cabinet. Just when I managed to reach the center part, I started to lose balance. I felt that any minute, I could fall off the cabinet.

I gripped the rim of the top part of the cabinet, but the cabinet wasn’t strong enough to hold me. Soon enough, it gave in.

I started to scream for help. It seemed like no one heard me. The next thing I knew, I was down on the floor with the Sto. Niño beside me.

I had minor bruises and scars. It wasn’t such a bad fall. But still, what I did was dangerous. I placed my life at stake.

At that moment, I believed it was the Sto. Niño Who helped me to survive. I realized it was He Who protected me. Maybe He caught me that’s why I was not really injured.

True enough, I have devoted myself to Him since then, having faith that Sto. Niño will continue to guide and guard me in my endeavors. I know that He will be with me always.

I wasn’t that much of a devotee to Sto. Niño before, but now, I already am.

After all, I am a witness as to how His power works.
