Flowers Galore!

- Sarinah Soliano -

An astounding quote from a great psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud. We buy flowers for different reasons and for different occasions. We feel that flowers can add color and vibrancy to a bare and an uninviting niche. Flowers can enliven any kind of single piece of treasure if one is just creative enough to blend art and passion into it.

Indeed, flowers are a feast to the eyes. Flowers are wonderful and refreshing gifts for friends or family. A stalk would make a child happy. A bunch would enchant a lover. A mixture of different kinds would entice the whole family. Flowers are not just for mere sensual attraction but for utter bliss and amusement. A person would feel special if he/she is given one.

But isn’t it more rewarding and relaxing if you won’t have to walk far to procure a multitude of flowers and grow your own collection right in your yard or garden?

Now, let us  give due respect to a businesswoman who has considered her “flowers” as an aid to her family’s plight. She considers this business as a means to maintain their current lifestyle.  She truthfully expressed that growing flowers on their own grounds can be quite difficult at times and costly.

A land area situated at Pung-ol Sibugay where a haven of colorful flora can be found is where Mrs. Godie Navarro, a mother of six, has successfully run the family business for seven years now. With three of her children willingly helping in sowing, harvesting and in putting of fertilizer on her budding plants, the business has been steadily attracting customers from all parts of Cebu. Mrs. Navarro remarked that due to the increasing demand of efflorescence, the family would continue to engage in this industry in the coming years.

Chrysanthemum, Star Mom, Jelly, Roses, Orchids all encompass the whole flower collection that she sells at Carbon Market. Tight as the location can be, it doesn’t hinder her from entertaining buyers and have them acquire as many clusters that are available. Prices are affordable, depending on the quantity and type of flower a regular buff buys. People would buy flowers for making corsages, garlands, wreaths, and for merely placing it as a centerpiece in their respective homes. November would be considered as the busiest and the most demanding season since a throng of flower “hunters” would invade her store to obtain flowers for their deceased loved ones.

As Mrs. Navarro keenly continues to place her efforts on this modest family business, she never forgets that combining patience, determination and hardwork does pay off in the end!
