The Adroit Mr. Kimsoy

- Sarinah Soliano -

“Painting is a silent poetry,“ were the words uttered by Ms. Mila Yuson as she welcomed everyone at  Kimsoy’s Images and Memories Exhibit which opened last Wednesday, November 28 at SM Art Gallery.

The event highlights the creative masterpiece done by Mr. Jose “Kimsoy” C. Yap, a professor at the University of San Carlos and a veteran in the painting arena. Joining him during the ribbon cutting were Mr. Oscar Chua, Mrs. Betty Yap and Mrs. Saturnina Go. Also in attendance were guests coming from the Cebu Arts Association, Kolor Sugbu, Cebu Artist Incorporated, Working Artist Group and students from the University of San Carlos-Technological Center.

Mr.Kimsoy, as he is known, inveigled onlookers with his artworks so passionately done. With the theme Images and Memories, Mr. Kimsoy’s 21 paintings crafted through oil, watercolor, pastel and graphite, will take you back to his time; back to his treasured memories of the past.

Inspired by the fervor and talent of his father who was also a painter, Kimsoy continues to magically draw young artists to delve in painting. Humble yet poised, he affirms that his discipline and consistency in his art have brought him to where he is right now.

He has been to numerous places outside Cebu joining his fellow artists in doing group exhibits, with several achievements under his belt. He has taught students to learn and love painting. According to him, Filipino painters are now starting to catch up with their foreign counterparts. His advice is that they should always keep their pace steady and unfaltering, always look ahead, keep at it, and be persistent and patient in their job.

Moody and quiet are the emotions instilled in his painting. But at times it could also be sunny and vibrant.

Positive responses coming from a lot of people who kept coming in. Whether they are art enthusiasts or not, they find Mr. Kimsoy’s work excellent and exceptional. And with these feedbacks, Mr. Kimsoy is hoping to have more and more exhibits in the years to come.

Mr. Kimsoy’s achievement in his work should be something that we Cebuanos be proud of. His gift is an inspiration and an encouragement, a testimony that a Filipino, particularly a Cebuano, can stand out if he continues to work hard and persevere, practice and have the will to master his skill.
