When stars and angels shine down
December 24, 2006 | 12:00am
A growing fascination since childhood was the wonder of the heavenly bodies that exist beyond our skies. As kids, we once asked, how many twinkling stars are there in the distant velvet night sky? How big are they or what shape could they be? What lies beyond space? Huh. Even until now we still gaze in wonder.
Tis' the season that fantasies and dreams are allowed, our imagination of stars and angels come to life! From the myriad of holiday ornaments that deck every street corner and homes, two of the season's mainstays provide answers that imagination. The supposed amorphous stars are given shape and color manifested in our very own parol (Philippine Christmas lantern). Angelic characters are visible in every Nativity scene or they may come as stand-alone decors often portrayed in playful cherubs or a chorus of seraphs.
Created from various materials, these symbols of Christmas show-off Cebuano ingenuity and craftsmanship. I remember from childhood, I stare upon that single parol hanging on our front door made only of the simplest colored plastic or the flimsy papel de japon. Until now I still could never forget my amazement. But as time passes by, the Filipino lantern has evolved, from its most basic to the architectural.
Presently, one will never feel short musing at these heavenly bodies. They are practically in every street lamppost and corner, corporate buildings herald them on elevated stalls and if you're keen enough, you'll find them tucked under the street overpass. Displayed in its most florid, technology and contemporary artistic expression hoists yesterday's basic lantern and cherubic interpretations to modern works of art. Embellished with glittering lights and sophisticated materials, how could one miss out this kaleidoscope of life?
But beyond that, it's more than the shape, color and flare. Stars and angels represent that significant tale of miracle and love. This season, may we find our own star and let it be the guiding light to give love and fulfill your angelic mission to share love to others, the kind that grows wings.
Blessed season, everyone!
