Photo journalism takes center-stage as the World Press Photo Exhibition makes a stop at Ayala Center Cebu from June 7 to 29 at the ground level in Paseo Marina and Rotunda Area 1.
Run by World Press Photo, an independent, non-profit organization founded in 1955 and based in the Netherlands, the exhibit will highlight winning entries for the World Press Photo Contest.
Now on its 49th year, the World Photo holds the only press photography contest with this great an international scope where works of photojournalists from all around the globe are given ample recognition in their critical contribution to media.
It is the only international event of this stature, not simply bringing together pictures from all parts of the globe but also reflecting trends and developments in photojournalism and revealing how the press gives us the news.
The contest takes pride in the significant perspective that camera stills give to the contemporary faces, places and events. This year's entries frame images from all across different borders like Australia, Chile, Czech Republic, Italy, Lebanon, Russia, South Africa and United Kingdom. More than bringing them together, World Photo solidifies the elevating trends and developments in photojournalism.
The main overall prize, the World Press Photo of the Year, is awarded for the single photograph that is not only the photojournalistic encapsulation the year, but represents an issue, situation or event of great journalistic importance, and does so in a way that demonstrates an outstanding level of visual perception and creativity. It has come to be regarded as the most prestigious award for photojournalism in the world.
The World Press Photo exhibition makes an extensive tour of the world during the year. More than 10 exhibitions are currently on display and soon the exhibition is to be opened in Warsaw, Vukovar, Cebu and Paris.
