Oftana is Gilas 12th man in Nagoya

MANILA, Philippines — A true soldier and patriot, Calvin Oftana is always ready to go to battle with Gilas Pilipinas – even on short notice.

Oftana steps in as a late addition and Gilas’ 12th man in the Asian Games in Japan, taking the spot initially reserved for the injured Justin Brownlee and coming in as the only holdover from the triumphant squad in 2023 who’s back for title defense.

“Answering the call (despite a) quick turnaround. Honored to represent the Philippines in the Asian Games and wear the Gilas jersey with pride,” the TNT forward said.

Oftana arrived two days before the new-look, all-Filipino Nationals plunge into action in Group C of the men’s basketball competition against Bahrain.

Coach Tim Cone said he sees no problem with Oftana, a member of Gilas’ main team, blending in with the original 11 and getting into flow with his system.

“Because of the system we are running and his previous experience in the window teams, he’s a plug-and-play player and will fit right in,” Cone said in a message to The STAR yesterday.

The Nagoya Asiad also marks the Gilas return of Oftana, who missed the team’s stint in the third and fourth windows of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers last July and August, respectively, due to hamstring and toe injuries.
