AlDub breaks World Cup Twitter record

CEBU, Philippines – Already expected to set a record attendance after selling out the 55,000 capacity Philippine Arena, the “Tamang Panahon” special of “Eat Bulaga” on Saturday also set a new social media high as the hashtag #AlDubEBTamangPanahon garnered over 39.5 million tweets on Twitter within 24 hours of its telecast.

The figure surpasses the previous hashtag record held by #AlDubEBforLove, which drew a total of 25.8 million tweets last September 26. It also set a new world record for Twitter, breaking the 4.8 million tweets set by the Super Bowl in February and the 35.6 million tweets generated by the Germany versus Brazil semifinal match during last year’s World Cup.

Since the #AlDub phenomenon began last July, every hashtag related to the popular love team of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza a.k.a. Yaya Dub has become a trending topic on Twitter every single day.

While there were no commercial breaks at all for the “Tamang Panahon” telecast that lasted nearly five hours from 10 a.m. to almost 3 p.m., the show did unveil a 29-second teaser for the big screen debut of Alden and Maine.

Directed by Jose Javier Reyes, the film “My Bebe Love: Kilig Pa More” is an entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival and was originally just going to star Vic Sotto and Ai-Ai delas Alas. After AlDub became a household name, the pair was cast in the film and now shares top billing with Bossing and Ai-Ai. — InterAksyon.com
