Ryan Reynolds booed at Cannes

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  Ryan Reynolds attended the premiere for his latest movie “The Captive” at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16, but after a disastrous screening, he was a no-show for the film’s afterparty, a source tell Us Weekly.

The move came fresh off of Reynold’s latest thriller getting not-so great reviews. Variety reviewed the film as “a ludicrous abduction thriller that finds a once-great filmmaker slipping into previously unentered realms of self-parody,” adding the film “was greeted with a smattering of boos” during the Cannes screening.

The 37-year-old and his wife Blake Lively, who stunned at the premiere in a Gucci strapless gown, instead opted for a “low-key late-night snack,” the source says.

The couple were spotted at Hotel Martinez terrace restaurant around 1 a.m., while the rest of “The Captive” cast attended the afterparty.

A source tells Us Weekly: “Ryan definitely seemed a little on edge. Wouldn’t be surprised if he skipped out on his party because the film is getting terrible reviews.”

Reynolds “seemed preoccupied on his cell phone” while the duo dined at the restaurant but was still “really affectionate” with Lively, the source adds.

“It looked like Blake was trying to cheer him up a few times…she rubbed his arm like she was consoling him and kept whispering in his ear,” the source continues. “At one point, Ryan smiled…and leaned into her for a kiss on the lips.”

Lea Michele admits dating Matthew Morrison before ‘Glee’

CEBU, Philippines - Looks like the showmance rumors were true after all — kind of. Years after denying a love connection with her “Glee” costar Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele is finally fessing up. In her new book, “Brunette Ambition,” the 27-year-old actress-singer admits she and Morrison, 35, actually did date — albeit briefly and before “Glee.”

The revelation comes late in the book, during a section about her getting the role of Rachel Berry on Fox’s hit show about high school glee clubbers. (The Ryan Murphy-created musical dramedy is now in its fifth season.)

“When we shot the pilot, I met Cory Monteith, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, and Chris Colfer for the first time,” Michele writes. “I had worked on Broadway with Jenna Ushkowitz and Matthew Morrison before. Matt had been a friend of mine for years, and in fact we’d actually dated back in the day for a Broadway beat.”

This is the first time Michele has admitted to having any romantic involvement with Morrison. The two dealt with rumors in the earlier days of “Glee” — before the actress started dating the late Monteith — but both insisted they were just friends.

Asked about the rumors by Parade magazine back in 2010, Morrison said, “We were literally on set and I got a call from my publicist [about Lea], and [Lea] got a call a minute later and we looked at each other. It’s so laughable.”

Michele was similarly dismissive of the reports — at the time, at least. “I’ve known Matt for years,” she told Hollywood.com. “He’s been a friend of mine from New York. People are going to make things up. I think it’s just because we really are so close.”

Original GMA-7 series ‘Sa Puso ni Dok’ premieres this July

GMA News TV mounts a groundbreaking new original series this year whose battlecry is the improvement of public health care in the country.

Entitled “Sa Puso ni Dok,” the medical drama shows the miserable state of a provincial hospital through the eyes of first year resident Doc Gab or Gabrielle dela Cruz, to be played by actress Bela Padilla. Sick children lying on cardboard in the hallways and a disturbing lack of basic medical equipment are just a few of the realities Doc Gab encounters when she is assigned to Melchora Aquino General Hospital fresh from med school in Manila. As the series progresses, she unearths corruption in the hospital, spearheaded by its bully of an administrator Sir Bong.

“Sa Puso ni Dok” also tells the love story between Doc Gab and the strict and mysterious head resident Doc Dennis, played by Dennis Trillo. The stern doctor slowly reveals his heroic side, as a volunteer who spends his personal time providing medical services in a remote barrio.

Exciting emergency room scenes, heartwarming medical cases and the harsh realities of Philippine government hospitals are brought to light in this original medical drama, to be helmed by Cannes Film Festival finalist and “Bayan Ko” director Adolf Alix Jr.

“Sa Puso ni Dok,” created by GMA News TV manager Sherilyn Bruan, is the channel’s must-see offering for the year. It airs this July only on Channel 11. (PR)

Sandra Bullock’s surprise commencement speech

Sandra Bullock surprised graduates of Warren Easton Charter High School at their commencement ceremony at the University of New Orleans’ Lakefront Arena, on May 19.

“Please join me in a warm welcome for Sandra Bullock,” the presider said as Bullock walked to the stage in a body-hugging plum dress, while the entire arena erupted. The 49-year-old star has been a big supporter of the school (the oldest public high school in the state of Louisiana), after it closed from 2005 to 2006 from Hurricane Katrina damages.

In her speech, the Oscar winner shared personal life anecdotes with the high school students. “I didn’t remember anything because I was so worried about the future,” Bullock told the crowd. “I wasn’t present.” The actress recalled how someone recently posed the question, “If you could go back and talk to your younger self, what would you say?”

“I wished someone had said to me what I’ve been spending the last four years, telling a little boy, who I love more than anything, who happens to be my son,” she explained of her adopted son Louis Bardo Bullock. “So I thought, ‘Maybe I will share that with you guys, that what I tell a 4-year-old, is what I wish someone had told me before I stepped out into the world.”

“The first thing is stop worrying so much,” Bullock said. “Stop being scared of the unknown, because anything I worried about didn’t happen. Other stuff happened. The unknown we can’t do anything about.”

Bullock’s second word of advice was to “raise the bar higher.” She added, “It is noisy out there and for some reason, people want to see you fail. That’s not your problem, that is their problem. I only remember the moments where I tried beyond what I thought I could do and I do not remember the failures because I didn’t. Nothing’s a failure, it’s just not supposed to work out that way because something better is supposed to come along.”

“The third thing we work on is at home in the morning,” the actress shared. “We turn on the music really really loud before we leave the house. And the rule is, you have to dance a little bit before you step out in the world, because it changes the way you walk.”

Additional funny words of advice included eating “something green every day with every meal” and “do not pick your nose in public.”

On a more serious note, the actress told the grads to embrace their loved ones whenever possible. “When someone who cares about you hugs you, hug them back with two arms.”

She went on to explain in great detail, “Don’t do the one-armed hug, because when you hug with two arms, it allows you to lean on somebody, and we always need somebody to lean on. If someone doesn’t want to play with you, it’s okay. Not everyone is going to love us, go find somebody who does want to play with you, and appreciates what you have to offer.”

Bullock’s final words of advice were “go find your joy. It’s what you’re going to remember in the end. It’s not the worry, it’s not the what-ifs. It’s the joy that stays with you,” she said.

Cinema One Global celebrates a decade of movie milestones

Cinema One Global, one of the most watched channels on TFC’s platforms across the world, draws the curtain for its 10th year celebrations, marked by a new on-air look and featuring iconic movies and personalities of their time, this June.

Cinema One Global launched its own signal and programming to serve the more discerning needs of overseas Filipinos (OFs), longing for a taste of home through film and the companionship of Kapamilya stars in 2004.  Cinema One Global, true to its claim “Kung Saan Ikaw Ang Bida,” launched a new programming to become a movie and drama channel, and included more movie choices, a marathon of widely watched Filipino teleseryes and reruns of well-loved drama series, to address more of OFs’ needs.

Now on its 10th year of ‘storytelling’ through film, Cinema One Global unveils its new look with a tagline fitting of its promise to adapt to the journey and changing needs of its OF viewers – “Saan Ka Man, Lagi Kang Kasama.”

According to Ned Legaspi, head of Global Content: “As TFC celebrates 20 years of the ‘galing ng Filipino’ and Cinema One marks 20 years of service in the Philippines, we also mark a decade of stories and people in film which and who, together with Cinema One Global, has made an impact in the life of Filipinos detached from home. Our tagline speaks of our commitment to be that indispensable part of the path they chose.”

To date, Cinema One Global continues to have the biggest library of films with 3,500 movies which include the exclusive rights to air the blockbuster movies of ABS-CBN Corporation movie production and distribution company, Star Cinema.  Cinema One Global’s offering also includes the most celebrated films from other movie outfits such as Viva Films, Octo Arts, Seiko Films, Regal Films and more.

To stay true to its anniversary promise, Cinema One Global now offers Filipino movies that speak of the Filipino story and spirit.

Filipino Heroes

In line with TFC’s 20th year celebrating the “galing ng Filipino (forge ahead with the greatness of the Filipino),” Cinema One Global will retell the stories of heroes of their own time, through history and across the distance through its weekly blocks “Bayani,” “Team Makabayan,” and “Mga Bagong Bayani.” These remarkable films include: “El Presidente and “Tirad Pass,”  “Dekada ’70” and “Eskapo,” and “Dubai,” and the TFC-produced “A Mother’s Story,” featuring Pokwang and directed by esteemed director John-D Lazatin.

Red Carpet Premiere

Also highlighting its anniversary line-up is the television premiere of 2013 hit “Four Sisters And A Wedding” (June 7), Cinema One Festivals 2011 finalist “Di Ingon, Nato” or Not Like Us (June 14),” breakthrough movie “Tuhog” (June 21) and independent film “Isda” (June 28).

Obra Ni Direk

As a fitting offering for ten years of Cinema One Global and consistent with TFC’s theme of “forging ahead with the greatness of the Filipino,” five of the finest films in Philippine history are brought back for contemporary audiences to enjoy: respected director, the late Lino Brocka’s “Maynila Sa Kuko ng Liwanag,” “Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang,” and multi-awarded director Mike de Leon’s “Sister Stella L,”  including digitally restored “Himala,” and “Oro, Plata, Mata,” directed by two of the greatest directors: Brocka and Peque Gallaga.

Filipino Movie Icons

Cinema One Global is also bringing back the most respected names in the film industry and their most celebrated movies: Da King Fernando Poe Jr., Comedy King Dolphy, Bad Boy of Philippine Cinema Robin Padilla and more.
