Young bags Miss World Phl 2013 crown, trains for Jakarta pageant + Crowd goes wild for TomDen at Ogie Alcasid’s anniversary concert

- Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

As expected, actress Megan Young won the Miss World Philippines 2013 title on coronation night last Sunday, August 18 at the Grand Ballroom of Solaire Hotel and Casino. It was a shining moment for the former Starstruck graduate. Megan was brave enough to stake her career in joining the Miss World Philippines pageant. Losing would have been embarrassing and would probably have affected her career.

Since Ruffa Gutierrez won as Second Princess at the Miss World Beauty pageant in 1993, it is only now that an actress is again competing in the pageant where the highest place we got was as first runner up, first by Ms. Evangeline Pascual in 1973 and repeated by Gwendoline Ruais two years ago.

Despite her celebrity status, Megan did not use this to her advantage. She made it clear that she wants to work as hard just like the other contenders. She didn’t want to be given special treatment.

She has only two weeks to train before leaving for Jakarta, Indonesia where the Miss World Pageant will be held on September 28. With the way she conducted herself while competing for the local title, she showed her readiness to be competitive with the rest of the world. And when she opens her mouth, Megan talks sense.

Let’s pray that Megan wins the elusive title that no Pinay has ever won. She earlier tried to join Bb. Pilipinas but was turned away due to a photo spread. Well, Bb. Pilipinas’ loss is Miss World Philippines’ gain. Good luck to Megan and may she bring home the crown.

It was Daniel Padilla and the TomDen loveteam of Tom Rodriguez and Dennis Trillo who got the loudest applause and cheers from the crowd at the “25: I Write the Songs,” the silver anniversary concert of Ogie Alcasid held at the MOA Arena on Friday night.

The fans of Daniel Padilla cheered when with the entry teen idol appeared on stage. He and Ogie did the mashup of Daniel’s ‘Nasa ‘Yo Na Ang Lahat’ and Ogie’s ‘Dito Sa Puso Ko.’ The crowd’s reception proves that Daniel is the hottest young actor today.

It can also be said that the TomDen loveteam is the hottest pair on TV. The crowd went delirious when Tom and Dennis came onstage to do the duet of “One More Try,” the theme song of the hit series “My Husband’s Lover” from GMA 7.

The audience also went wild when Ogie came onstage and appeared jealous before he approached the two. The crowd cheered lustily when Tom and Dennis held each other’s hand while singing the line “Hold my hand and look straight into my eyes.”

After that TomDen number, Ogie did the song “Sirena” with Ebe Dancel and Gloc 9.

One segment in the concert that will be remembered (and may not happen again) was seeing Kuh Ledesma, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, Jaya and Janno Gibbs together in one stage. All of them come from competing Sunday programs and it took the memorable concert of Ogie to see them singing onstage.

Now that his anniversary concert is over, Ogie is set to prepare for his new show on TV5, his new network. He is doing the musical show The Megastar and The Songwriter with Sharon Cuneta that will be airing this September.

Senatorial race topnotcher Grace Poe met with the members of the entertainment press in her thanksgiving party for her victory in the May elections. Despite being a newbie in politics, Grace emerged number one and was very thankful for the support of the entertainment press, many of whom were friends of her parents, the late Fernando Poe Jr. and Ms. Susan Roces.

Sen. Grace said she will file a resolution to find the role of the NGOs in the alleged mismanagement of the PDAF or pork barrel.

“It is the poorest of the poor who feel the brunt of this breach of public trust. The PDAF belongs to the people, especially the most marginalized members of our society.  As the people’s representatives in government, we must put an end to the squandering of public funds in our country,” she said.

“Ang isa pa, nais ko na makaharap ang mga tunay na biktima tulad ng mga magsasaka at mangingisda na hindi naman nabigyan ng tulong, bagkus ginamit na, ninakawan pa. Tutukan natin kung magkano ang kinupit, pero dapat alamin din natin gaano kadami ang nawalan ng benepisyo at nagdusa.”

With regards the film industry, Sen. Grace said a bill should be filed that will enable the government to subsidize the film industry and the entertainment sector. There is a law like this that is being implemented in other countries. She also said that it should be an income generating for our entertainment sector the constant influx of foreign film outfits that are using the Philippines as location for their productions.
