Edu doesn't want Lucky in politics

- Ricky L. Calderon -

CEBU, Philippines - Actor and TV-host Edu Manzano is not in favor of his son, Luis Manzano, joining politics. The actor made this comment during the presscon of his latest show on TV5 entitled “Game N Go,” which will premiere on the Kapatid network on June 17.

“I am strongly against it. He is doing good money. He is working very hard. He can render public service in many other ways. There is always sacrifice. I don’t believe in doing TV shows and movies then you’d render public service. Doing so would only divide your attention. You ought to give public service full concentration. People deserve it,” said Edu.

He says he feels very strongly against Luis entering politics, especially at a time when the country is “very divided”. When he himself joined politics in 2004, he stopped doing movies. “Plus I believe in going quality time to the people. If your intention is to serve, you ought to give ample time. You can’t do so if you have a career in showbiz. That is my opinion.”

Edu said he knows that some people are trying to talk to Luis to enter the political arena. “Yes, the offer could be overwhelming and seems hard to refuse, but you know, you should allow your better judgment,” Edu says.

Did he ever discuss this matter with Luis’ mother, Lipa City Governor Vilma Santos-Recto?

“No, Vilma is entitled to her opinion as I am entitled to mine. But what I feel is more important is that my son ought to think very well before he decides. Luis is 32 years old. He has to understand the ramifications of his decision. It is possible that if he doesn’t become successful when he enters politics, it would have a negative effect on his showbiz career. He has to understand that the people voting for him, these people are giving him their lives so they deserve unlimited time and attention. I believe that when one enters politics, he ought to give it his undivided attention.”

Well, Edu knows what he speaks of. After all, he was in politics before. The former vice mayor of Makati sacrificed his showbiz career when he entered politics. In 2004, he gave up doing movies and in 2007, he gave up doing teleseryes.

Aside from being a former public servant, Edu also became the chairman of the Optical Media Board, the agency tasked to tackle the problem of piracy in the film and music industries. That job also took its toll on his career. It’s an election year next year but Edu has no plans of running for any position. He’d rather concentrate on his revived TV career.

We heard a rumor that there is a plan to cast BB Gandanghari (or Rustom Padilla if you still want to call him that way) and Zoren Legaspi in one show.

If you recall, BB was the ex-husband of Carmina Villaroel who is now the “wife” of Zoren. Getting married in church or through civil rites is the only thing needed to make Zoren and Carmina husband and wife, at least officially.

As a prelude to this planned TV show for Zoren and BB, the much-awaited encounter between the two will reportedly happen via an interview on the TV5 Saturday showbiz talk show “Paparazzi” (which now airs every Saturday before midday) on the Kapatid network.

Gabby Eigenmann is really hot. After his award-winning take in “Ang Munting Heredera” (where he won best supporting actor at the Golden Screen TV Awards), the projects continue to pour for the talented actor from the Eigenmann clan.

Doing very well in the ratings is the afternoon drama “Broken Vow,” which saw a dramatic turn-around for the character that he plays. As Roberto, he is supposed to be so in love with Melissa (played by Bianca King) but due to extreme jealousy, he makes her life miserable.

As Broken Vow winds up in the next two weeks or so, Gabby has started work in the new series “Makapiling Kang Muli” with Richard Gutierrez and Carla Abellana wherein he plays an important role in the back story.

Strike while the iron is hot seems to be Gabby’s motto. “I am so inspired to work because of the good projects coming my way,” said the actor.
