9th Golden Screen Awards

The 9th Golden Screen Awards, to be held on Saturday at the Teatrino Greenhills is getting to be very controversial. Our group had been the target of tirade by movie columnist and publicist Jobert Sucaldito after Laguna governor Jeorge “ER” Ejercito failed to get an acting nomination for his work in “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story. Jobert is the publicist of Gov. ER and we understand his sentiment over the failure of Gov. ER to secure a nomination.

The Entertainment Press Society has issued an official statement and we are sharing it with the readers of The Freeman.

For the past nine years since the group’s inception, the Entertainment Press Society (EnPress) has been giving out its movie awards known as EnPress Golden Screen Awards fairly and consistently.

EnPress is proud of its winners’ circle, recognizing both mainstream and independent movies’ achievement without fear or favor and purely on its merits. All nominated movies are duly reviewed and screened and individually scored by the voting members of EnPress.

For the 2012 Golden Screen Awards, 15 of the 24 regular members participated in the screening. All movies screened are given individual score sheet where members get to score all possible categories. Scores range from 1 or ‘not satisfactory’ to 10 ‘excellent’ and these are all tallied after all movies are screened and the process of screening officially closes.

During the screening, individual votes are sacred and will not be known to the other screening members but to the Executive Committee Chairman only. There is no deliberation during this process of individual voting.

With any/every category/individual achievement getting a score between 150 (everyone scoring 10) and 15 (everyone scoring 1), the EnPress Executive Committee peg a rating ceiling between 110 and 120 scores depending on the number of possible nominees. Only those reaching the ceiling scores can qualify for a nomination slot.

The nominee list is then read by the Executive Committee Chairman for the Golden Screen in a special meeting of EnPress and is approved by the members collectively. The approved nominee list becomes final and official and to this, EnPress stands by its result.

The EnPress is proud to award its set of winners this March 24, all nominees deserving to win by the high standard the Society has set from the start.

In good faith, the EnPress is returning the one hundred thousand pesos sponsorship given by Laguna Governor ER Ejercito for the Golden Screen TV Awards last November (for which the society has fully compensated by media mileage given to the Governor and his MMFF 2011 movie Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story).

The lucky stars of Rocco Nacino are shining for him. He won the Best New Movie Actor Award at the Star Awards last week for his performance in the Cinemalaya entry “Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa.” He is likewise nominated in the 9th Golden Screen Awards in the Breakthrough Performance of an Actor category for his work in the same film. The Golden Screen Awards will be held this Saturday, March 24 at Teatrino Greenhills, San Juan City.

It would be a fitting birthday gift for Rocco (who will turn 25 today) if he wins on Saturday. We believe he is one of the strong contenders for the said award. When we watched “Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” last year at the CCP, we were impressed with Rocco’s acting and we were happy that he got a nomination.

Also waiting for Rocco is “Biag ni Lam-Ang,” a big-budget movie on the Ilocano epic story. The movie will be shot in the Ilocos region, with Rochelle Pangilinan as Rocco’s leading lady. He is now undergoing training in martial arts as well as in arnis. Filming for the Lam-Ang flick is due to start soon. And Rocco is preparing hard for his role of a lifetime.

Many televiewers are also praising Rocco’s performance in the afternoon TV series “The Good Daughter” where he plays a bad boy.

According to Ilocos Norte Governor Ms. Imee Marcos, she has no plans of producing a movie on the Ilocano epic tale Lam-Ang.

What they are doing instead is a science fiction version of Lam-Ang with the title Ang Lam-Ang (The Experiment). The lady governor from Ilocos says the young people of today might not be able to appreciate the story of Lam-ang if they would treat the movie as an epic presentation.

Aside from making a film in a science fiction format, they are also coming out with a game that can be played on the Net.

When asked if she would allow her son Borgy Manotoc to enter showbiz, Gov. Marcos jokingly said, “Bulol naman siyang mag-Tagalog.” For his part, Borgy said he is not closing his doors on showbiz but he is happy doing commercials and endorsements.

Gov. Marcos invited the press to the launch of Paoay as prime tourist destination in the Ilocos region. They dubbed their campaign as Paoay ay Kumakaway.

She said they have a lot of interesting places where people could go to in summer or even in December. “We have a lot of fiestas and special events that would be of interest to tourists and other travelers. We want to make Paoay as prime tourist destination. We have our share of good hotels as well as affordable homes which are open to tourists as well,” said Gov. Marcos.
