USC to offer film course

CEBU, Philippines - The University of San Carlos will offer Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Cinema starting June this year.

This will be the first university-based curriculum in Cebu. The four-year course thus provides a balance between theory and practice of filmmaking in an academic setting.

The curriculum covers cinematography, editing, sound, and other aspects of film production. But emphasis is also placed on film history, theory, aesthetics and criticism. Other subjects include film curating, animation, TV production, thus widening career options for the graduates.

Even before it offered the film course, the USC Department of Fine Arts has been producing some of Cebu’s award-winning independent filmmakers, like Remton Zuasola, Kerwin Go, Kris Villarino, Christian Linaban, and Victor Villanueva.

The film program is USC's response to calls for the revival of Cebuano film industry.
