Pinoy Magazine Names Myrus One of Five Next Big Things In Opm List includes Jovit, Young JV, Frencheska, and Duncan

CEBU, Philippines - Myrus Ramirez has been chosen by respected Filipino music magazine “Pinoy: Your OPM Music Authority” as one of the top young musical artists today—and part of an exciting roster of talents that will usher in the future of Philippine music.

Together with Myrus, others included in the list are RnB singer Duncan Ramos, rapper Young JV, and reality show winners Frencheska Farr and Jovit Baldovino.

“Myrus has a captivating and versatile voice that can make you stop and listen. He is undeniably a fresh addition to the music scene, bringing both depth and power to his vocal interpretations. He simply takes a song and its listeners to a whole new level of enjoyment. It’s hard to believe that he’s only 20 years old when you watch him perform.

“Myrus is always brimming with confidence and is able to infuse his radiant personality into the music. Given a big break, there is no doubt that he is ready to become and be recognized as ‘the next big thing’ in the OPM landscape,” says Pinoy Magazine Editor-in-Chief Annie Medina.

With the future of OPM on his shoulders, Myrus remains unfazed whether by criticism or praise. Upon signing a management contract with Viva Entertainment Company (Myrus is co-managed by both Chris Cahilig and Viva Entertainment), the young Myrus was proclaimed as “the next big thing in Philippine music” by no less than Viva big boss Vic del Rosario.

Recently, Myrus wowed audiences at the international music festival, “Then and Now” held at the SM Mall of Asia featuring top world-class artists including pop/RnB singer-songwriter Jojo; reggae fusion superstar Diana King; RnB, hip hop and soul trio Sisters With Voices; and even 90s icons PM Dawn.

Myrus was the only Filipino artist to be invited as a performer in the “Then and Now” international music festival. Myrus’ most memorable moment during the show was when Diana King herself told him, “You are a great artist. You have such an amazing voice.”

Much earlier, during Myrus’ first major solo concert at the Teatrino, he received similar accolades from Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez. She told the audience how much she admired Myrus’ singing.

“There are those who are skilled singers – but they’re just that: skilled singers. Myrus is something else: he’s a very skilled singer who has a distinctly beautiful voice. His voice has that brilliant quality that is pleasing to hear,” said Regine.

With so many good words about his gifts as a vocalist—from other topnotch singers, no less—it’s refreshing to note that Myrus has remained modest and with both feet kept firmly on the ground.

“Siyempre masaya ang makarinig ng mga ganung papuri. Lalo na kung galing sa mga sobrang galing na, world-class pa na singers gaya nina Ms. Regine at Diana King. Pero dapat yung mga ganun, ilagay natin sa puso natin at gawing inspirasyon para lalong magsikap.

“Kasi pag sa ulo mo nilagay yung mga ganung comments, eh di sosobra ang bilib mo sa sarili mo. Magiging downfall mo yun as a performer. Pag ikaw mismo bumilib sa sarili mo, magiging mayabang o mapagmataas ka, that’s the end for you,” says Myrus.

Myrus didn’t come from a privileged background: he actually went into singing to earn extra cash from himself and his family. He started singing professionally as a teen-ager in bars, where he would get paid some money—but only after singing at lot of songs: he recalls singing as much as 40 or 50 songs in one night.

It was hard work that didn’t have fair compensation—but it turns out that all of the hardship was a preparation for bigger and better things.

By 2009, Myrus had his first certified hit: he recorded a soulful remake of “Sayang”, a classic 1970s hit by Claire dela Fuente. The song propelled his first solo album, “Love Cycle” to Gold Record status. Shortly after that, his nationwide mall tours, his solo concert and even more appearances on television and other live performances followed, including his “Then and Now” performance.

In Myrus’ case the wisdom of patience and perseverance, combined with his great natural talent and passion for music, is really paying off.

Myrus is all set to record his second album. He’s still mum on the details but he did hint that the songs on the second album will both challenge him as a singer and highlight is vocal gifts.

So what else has he learned on his journey as a singer? “Friends are very important. In this business you have to know who your true friends are. They are the only ones who will support you in good times and bad times. Sila ang magiging lakas at inspirasyon mo,” says Myrus.

With the value he places in friendship, trust, patience and self-improvement, as well as his immense talent, it looks like the future of OPM is assured with Myrus carrying the torch in the years to come. (PR)
