The VISAYAN AGENDA tackles cultural preservation

CEBU, Philippines - This Saturday in Visayan Agenda, correspondents Monching Auxtero, Reyn Nikko Sereno, Alan Domingo, and Lou-anne Mae Rondina will take turns in bringing to light concerns on cultural preservation.

In Bahandi, Auxtero will present two of the oldest churches in Bohol – Baclayon Church and Loboc Church. Auxtero will report on how the local government unit, local folks, and private groups go hand in hand in fighting for the preservation of what are considered to be treasures of the land.

Meanwhile, Sereno’s report, Bisaya Ispisyal, will put Central Visayas in focus, particularly its dialect – Bisaya. Though the dialect is being integrated in some of the schools in Region VII, the fact cannot be denied that as time passes by and if no action will be done, then Cebuanos could become ignorant of their own native tongue.

Domingo’s Kabilin, on the other hand, will discuss how modernization has rapidly changed the landscape of the province. Domingo will focus on Plaza Independencia, which is considered the most historically significant plaza in Cebu. A great portion of the said plaza has been reshaped to give way to the SRP tunnel project, which shows that even the most significant landmarks that showcase culture and the Cebuanos’ roots are not exempted from humiliation.

In Baluarte, Rondina will report on the current state of watch towers. Rondina will delve on how these silent fortresses, which have once been part of the province’s bustling trade and commerce, have quietly slipped into obscurity.
