Throwback

Just before writing this, I got wind of Noynoy Aquino’s early morning announcement that he has accepted the challenge to run for president. I had expected as much, believing that he would not be able to ignore the events have aligned in his, and, more importantly, the country’s favor. While I have yet to decide whom to vote for, I sincerely believe Noynoy is a solid game-changer.

Now, we’re likely to have a good pool of candidates to choose from because of his entry into the game. And thus, the time is ripest for the change we need to make.

The comparison to Cory’s own acceptance of the challenge to run for president cannot be avoided, even as many are also reminding people not to let senseless emotions get away with them. It is no longer the eighties, after all, they say, times are different now, the yellow fever that has been sweeping the nation notwithstanding.

Personally, I still don’t know what to make of that rationalization. I’ve let true emotions—after much discernment, and stripping down of knee-jerk responses—guide my way through life, and I’ve always been taken to beautiful places in my life.

Speaking of beautiful places, the eighties have been on my mind lately. I was a child during the 1980s and, in my mind, the world and its people was at its most beautiful. Of course, that had a lot to do with being taught only, to borrow Imelda’s words, “the true, the good, and the beautiful,” even when it came to historical interpretations like Magellan “discovered” the Philippines and the like. But it also had a lot to do with movements like USA for Africa, the birth of political correctness, the growth of environmentalism, and our very own Edsa Revolution. If I am a hundred percent idealistic, I think, it is because I was a child in the eighties.

The Wonder Years are back

And, speaking of being a child in the eighties, Fred Savage was, too. And he was the star of one of the best television series ever, The Wonder Years. It remains to be one of my top wishes to acquire a DVD set of all the seasons of The Wonder Years—unfortunately, this has not been released because securing the music rights is quite costly. Those who followed this series would remember that one of its plusses was its great soundtrack.

Happily, just today, I also got wind of the news that The Hallmark Channel will start airing The Wonder Years again. The dramedy featuring Kevin Arnold and his growing up years in the 1960s will again play out to old fans and, most likely, new ones beginning September 19 at 6pm.  Make sure to catch it. We’d want the entire series to be aired.

The Biggest Loser pays tribute to the eighties

While still waiting for The Biggest Loser Asia to start showing, I’ve been following the current season being aired on The Hallmark Channel. In the most recent episode of The Biggest Loser Families (Season 6), the remaining contestants get to don eighties-inspired outfits—leotards and short shorts and all—all throughout the day’s challenge. I don’t remember eighties fashion being that weird, inspite having worn them myself—leotards and short shorts and all.
