On Jennylyn Mercado's 'disappearing act' plus Sharon Cuneta to prove mettle as comedian in "BFF"

- Ricky L. Calderon -

Jennylyn Mercado was a no-show in her supposed TV guest appearance in Startalk last Saturday, a mini-presscon that was also scheduled that Saturday evening, as well as her TV guest stint in “SOP” last Sunday. The series of supposed appearances were meant for the promotion of her second solo concert titled “I Am Woman” to be held tomorrow night at the Music Museum.

Her non-appearance prompted her manager, Becky Aguila, to face the invited press people at the scheduled press conference as they could no longer cancel. But Jennylyn’s manager said that she doesn’t want to get affected or at least show that she is rattled by the disappearing act of her ward.

She did say it was very unlike Jennylyn to ignore text messages or calls made to her. Even if she may not answer at once, she answers just the same. But her cell phone could not reached. When she left home last Saturday, Jennylyn said she’s just going to have her camera fixed and then she’d proceed to Ping Antonio’s beauty salon to have herself made up because she was supposed to appear in Startalk. But she failed to show up. Same thing happened last Sunday at “SOP.”

While Becky tried her best not to be affected, the manager expressed confidence that something good might still come out despite Jennylyn’s sudden disappearance. She had apologized to “Startalk” and “SOP” on behalf of Jennylyn who finally gave word to her executive producer of “Paano Ba Ang Mangarap” that she’s reporting back to work. But she gave no reason why she made her vanishing act.

According to Calvin Neria, the publicist of her concert and also her director, Jennylyn must have been stressed and pressured because of the demands of her second solo concert.

Her manager requested the press to give Jen some room and support her still because she has gone through a lot of headaches and heartaches. “Jennylyn knows very well that her priority right now is her child, Alex Jazz, because she wants to prepare for his future,” said Becky. “I don’t think she would let go of the chance to work and do her best for her concert since this would benefit her child.”

“I Am Woman” also features Ogie Alcasid, Janno Gibbs, Christian Bautista, Richard Poon, Jay-R and fast-rising singers Jasmine Fitzgerald and Nico Antonio. The concert also features Mark Herras who will do a special number with Jennylyn. The two are paired together in the soap opera “Paano Ba ang Mangarap” which is rating very well.

Opening today in theaters nationwide is the movie “BFF (Best Friends Forever),” the first team up of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and Comedy Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas. Will “BFF,” which is directed by Wenn Deramas, topple the box-office record set by “You Changed My Life” that starred Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz?

Sharon hasn’t done a comedy film for a long time so it’s a welcome change to see her tackling a comic role in BFF. Her mettle as an actress is not to be questioned, but since she’s doing this comedy with the comedy queen Ai Ai as her co-star, will Sharon be as effective? The movie bears watching since this is only third time (if we are not mistaken) that Sharon is doing a comedy film in her 30 years in the business.

Sharon said she gave her all in this movie, even agreeing to do things that she had not before. That is includes making fun of herself and her not-so-sexy figure. She even tried hanging on to a moving bus. It was only later on that she realized, same with Direk Wenn, that it was a dangerous thing that she did.

Aside from Sharon at Ai Ai, the movie also stars John Estrada, Joy Viado, and Chocoleit.
