Pandemic and Bottoms Up Sea?

-

CEBU, Philippines – This Wednesday, Born to be Wild goes deep into two pressing issues linked to animals and the environment.

A virus is spreading all over the world, infecting people from Mexico , the U.S. and different parts of Asia . This deadly virus is said to have come from pigs. The influenza A H1N1 virus, more commonly known as swine flu is not the first to be transmitted from animals to humans, and caused global panic. SARS, avian flu and HIV have hit the world before, bringing to light the need to reexamine animal and human interactions. Doc Ferds Recio investigates the swine flu issue and seeks to answer the question: are we ready for the next pandemic?

Meanwhile guest Jace Flores steps in for Kiko Rustia and immerses in a fishing village in Nasugbu, Batangas. Jace goes out to sea with local fishermen to help them find their catch. But a whole day worth of fishing yields only five pieces of small fish for Jace and the fisher folk - an irony especially for Batangas, part of what is considered center of the world's marine biodiversity. Experts say that the tales of fishermen only indicate a larger problem—the depletion of marine resources which is predicted to result in a seafood crisis in the next couple of years. Has mankind exhausted the seas?

Find out the answers to these gripping questions on Born to be Wild airing on Wednesday after Saksi over GMA Network.
