CEBU, Philippines - Disney-Pixar's summer animated offering Up will premiere in Digital 3D as the opening night movie at this year's Cannes Film Festival, making it the first time ever that either a Disney movie or an animated film have opened the prestigious festival. Opening night takes place on May 13.
Directed by Pete Docter (Monsters Inc.), Up is a comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 9-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell.
Disney chairman Dick Cook says, "It’s a great honor for The Walt Disney Studios, and our incredibly talented cast members at Pixar Animation Studios, to have Up selected as the first animated feature to ever open the Cannes Film Festival. Adding to this historic milestone, Up is also the first digital 3D film, and the first Disney film selected for the coveted opening night slot at Cannes. Up will open soon in Digital 3D and conventional theaters across the Philippines.
